Narlikar will be missed. There will be a display about his Scientific and Public literature\, as well as memories of him and Prof. Naresh Dadhich\, who we also lost last year. DESCRIPTION:Chandra Public Lecture (Open to all)\n \n \nProf. Duncan Lorimer \nWest Virginia University \nThe Brightest Pulsars In The Universe\n Almost two decades ago a group at West Virginia University discovered the first example of a new cosmic phenomenon now known as fast radio bursts (FRBs). While the precise origins of FRBs are still unknown\, they are likely to be linked to powerful events on or in the vicinity of neutron stars. FRBs are now being used as insightful probes of the large-scale structure of the Universe. In this talk\, I recount the story of the discovery and highlight the role of serendipity in science while looking ahead to the future of this field. \n  \nDuncan Lorimer is an observational astronomer specializing in single-dish radio astronomy. Known for his contributions to pulsar astrophysics\, and his role in the discovery of fast radio bursts\, Lorimer’s main research interests involve understanding the underlying populations of both pulsars and fast radio bursts and using them as tools for Galactic astronomy and Cosmology. \n  \n>> VIEW ALL IUCAA SCIPOP EVENTS \n

Please arrive early to reserve seats. \n\nChandra Public Lecture by Hamsa Padmanabhan \nMapping The First Billion Years: Secrets from our Invisible Universe \nThe epoch of Cosmic Dawn — the birth of the first galaxies in our Universe\, about a hundred million years after the Big Bang — is now directly observable\, thanks to facilities like the James Webb Space Telescope. \nThe first galaxies transformed hydrogen — the most abundant element in the Universe — from its neutral to its ionised form\, in a process known as Cosmic Reionization. Current research suggests that Reionization was complete when the Universe was approximately 1 billion years old. \nAn exquisite investigation of Cosmic Dawn is possible with a technique called intensity mapping (IM). IM probes the distribution of hydrogen using its 21 cm emission line\, which manifests in the ‘invisible’ radio band. It will be able to unlock several thousand times more information than available from all surveys today. Along with synergies with complementary observations\, these efforts have opened up the fascinating possibility to constrain theories of fundamental physics from the Cosmic Dawn. \n  \n>> VIEW ALL IUCAA SCIPOP EVENTS
